We initially chose to have au pairs because my husband and I have travelled extensively and always enjoyed meeting and making friends with people from other cultures.We also want to expose our children to many cultures and getting to know and love an au pair is a great way for them to start.The au pair program is a really good way for us to welcome a new family member into our home and share our experiences through daily living.We have two au pairs simultaneously because we have four young children; a 4-year-old daughter and 6-month-old triplets.Because the children are so young, we have had two au pairs since the triplets were born and it has worked very well.The work is divided equally, we never have the au pair watch all of the children because we feel this would be too much for one.Our three year old attends a local school for three hours each morning and we ask the au pair to drive her to and from school on certain days.She is a lively passionate little girl who loves to play pretend, listen to stories, sing and dance.We like her to have one scheduled activity everyday with an au pair such as going to the library, swimming, playing in the park or doing an arts and crafts project.The triplets are too young for outdoor activities yet, but we try to structure their days at home. Honesty and a true love for children are important and prior infant and toddler experience would be helpful.We try hard to keep our home tidy and we ask that our au pairs do the same.We live in a six bedroom house in a nice neighbourhood approximately one and a half hours drive to Washington DC.Each au pair has their own room, and they share a bathroom and a comfortable living area with a television and VCR.We feel they need a place of their own to relax and unwind after a busy day with the family!We also offer them use of the car after work.
