Au Pair/Washington, DC.

Hello!We live in a house in a suburb about 8 miles (14 km) west of Washington, DC. Ellen is 1.5 years old.She is a happy, active girl.Currently, her favorite things to do are feeding squirrels, petting dogs, looking at books and being read to, climbing on things, going down slides, dancing, and turning around in a circle.She goes to some neighborhood playgroups and a music class, and we plan to have her in a group activity about four days a week.She takes a two-hour nap during the day.Bill works full time at the U.S.International Trade Commission, researching and tracking international trade in computer and legal services.Laura works four days a week at the U.S.Department of Health and Human Services, analyzing the effectiveness of U.S.social service programs.Bill's main interests are marathon running and gardening.Laura likes volleyball and reading, and has recently started painting classes.Both of our extended families live in the Washington, DC area, so we see them fairly often.Our entire family likes to ski.One reason why we like the au pair program is the international exchange aspect.Laura has lived in Sweden for two different stints, first studying at Stockholm University, and later working as a translator at Statistics Sweden.She also lived with a family in Yugoslavia for a summer as a teenager.Bill lived in Italy as a child, spent a summer studying in England, and has had several vacations with relatives in Norway.We are very excited about participating in an international exchange program, and hope that this will be much more than just childcare.We believe that open communication, flexibility and managing expectations are crucial for a successful exchange experience.We live in a single-family home in a Virginia suburb 8 miles west of Washington, DC.Our house is fairly modest by Washington standards, but it has a fair amount of room.The au pair has it's own room and bathroom on the lower level, where the family room is.This should give the au pair a fair amount of privacy.
