Doctoral student in Chemistry

Doctoral student in Chemistry

Arbetsbeskrivning

Örebro University and the School of Science and Technology are looking for a doctoral student for the doctoral programme in Chemistry (alternatively Chemistry with specialization in environmental science), concluding with a licentiate degree.

The doctoral study is positioned at the interdisciplinary Man-Technology-Environment Research Centre (MTM) at Örebro University (http://www.oru.se/mtm), which conducts state of the art applied research to advance knowledge on the fate and risks of potentially harmful chemicals to humans and the environment. The MTM Research Centre has an excellent infrastructure for biological and chemical research, including high end mass spectrometers such as high-resolution LC- and GC-qToF, GC-orbitrap, and several low-resolution LC-MS/MS and GC-MS systems. We also have specialized instruments such as supercritical fluid chromatograph, combustion-ion chromatograph (CIC) to measure organic halogens, and LC- and GC-fractionators.

Project description
The doctoral candidate will participate in a project starting summer 2021, with a focus on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and extractable organic fluorine (EOF) to investigate how EOF represents contamination of the entire group of highly fluorinated chemicals, and hence different action limits can be established using EOF instead of a continuously increasing number of chemicals being measured. Specific tasks include i) comparison on selectivity of different extraction methods for measuring EOF in different water samples; ii) characterization of EOF in different water samples using novel techniques; iii) method development of a sensitive method for measuring EOF in drinking water; and establishment of a standard operating protocol (SOP) for measuring EOF in water samples. The successful candidate should demonstrate knowledge in organic analytical chemistry and have interest in mass spectrometric analysis and multivariate statistics. Experience with sample preparation, total oxidizable precursor (TOP) assay and relevant oxidation process, LC-MS/MS, Q-TOF, and combustion ion chromatography analyses, as well as working in an interdisciplinary research environment are valuable merits.
