Örebro University and the School of Medical Sciences are looking for a doctoral student for the doctoral programme in Medical Science, ending with a doctoral degree in Philosophy in Medical Science. Start date: spring 2021.

Project description
Plant-based Proteins for Health and Wellbeing (PAN Sweden) is a recently established interdisciplinary research centre clarifying the relationship between processing, structure, bioavailability, digestion and fermentation of proteins and health effects in terms of gut, metabolic and mental health, with the consumer in focus. Coordinated by Örebro University, PAN Sweden is a collaboration of Örebro University, Chalmers University of Technology, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Uppsala University, and RISE Sweden, together with Swedish industrial and public health partner organisations.  Our vision is that food produced in environmentally sustainable ways and with health benefits will become consumers’ preferred choice. PAN Sweden wants to expand its scientific staff with early-stage researchers with a genuine interest in interdisciplinary research.

The purpose of the interdisciplinary PhD project offered here will be to assess the interactions between plant-based proteins, dietary fibre and the individual intestinal ecosystem with regard to gut, metabolic and mental health.

The position is within the School of Medical Sciences at Örebro University, which is a modern, broad-based, and growing university with currently around 1 500 employees and 17 000 students and positioned among the best 400 universities globally according to the Times Higher Education ranking. Part of the research within this PhD project will also take place at Chalmers Technical University, Gothenburg, and/or at the company Lantmännen, Stockholm, Sweden. The School of Medical Sciences is home of a medical teaching curriculum (MD) and comprises several strong research environments mainly focused on inflammation, metabolism and nutrition. The PhD project, as well as the whole research environment PAN Sweden, is also part of the Örebro University Strategical Research Programme “Food & Health”, which comprises interdisciplinary research projects, teaching activities as well as infrastructural investments with a strong focus on outreach to society and includes all Faculties and Schools of the University.

The selected candidate is expected to be attracted by an interdisciplinary and dynamic research environment with strong interaction with external public and non-public stakeholders and should show strong and independent problem solving and critical analytical capabilities. Furthermore, the candidate can co-operate and possesses personal maturity. Very good spoken and written command of English is essential.

Entry requirements and selection
For admission to doctoral studies, applicants are required to meet both general entry requirements and specific entry requirements. In addition, applicants must be considered in other respects to have the ability required to benefit from the programme. For a full account of the entry requirements, refer to the admissions regulations as well as to annex 2 to the general syllabus for Medical sciences.

Applicants meet the general entry requirements for research studies if they


• have been awarded a qualification at the master’s level or
• have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits (four years), of which at least 60 credits awarded at the master’s level, or
• have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

For applicants to meet the specific entry requirements for research studies in this specific PhD study programme subject, candidates should have a masters degree in medical sciences, biomedical sciences, or in a related subject.
