Sahlgrenska akademin utlyser doktorandplatser med placering vid institutionen för biomedicin, institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper, institutionen för medicin och institutionen för neurovetenskap och fysiologi.

Doktorandplatserna avser två års utbildningsbidrag och två års doktorandanställning, alternativt fyra års doktorandanställning, och beräknas leda fram till doktorsexamen.

Glycine receptors on cholinergic interneurons in the nucleus accumbens controls synaptic output and regulates the reward sensation displayed by ethanol

Description of the research project
Studies performed at the Addiction Biology Unit, Sweden's largest group for biological alcohol research, have demonstrated that strychnine-sensitive glycine receptors (GlyRs) may be initial ethanol targets, and involved in regulating the neuronal circuitry connecting the nucleus accumbens (nAc) with the ventral tegmental area (VTA) (the nAc-VTA-nAc neuronal loop).This thesis project will aim to study the role of GlyRs in the nAc with special focus on 1) control of striatal microcircuitry, 2) ethanol-induced changes in striatal output, and 3) modulation of the reward-sensation induced by alcohol.The methodology on which this project is based involves electrophysiology, microdialysis and immunohistochemistry.Ideally, the applicant should have previous experience using these techniques.
