Electrical Engineer in CERN's Occupational Health and Safety

Arbetsbeskrivning

Company Description:
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description
Introduction

Are you a qualified and proactive Electrical Engineer, willing to contribute to a unique work environment at the heart of one of the world's most complex and exciting scientific experiments? Then this opportunity is for you. Join the largest particle physics research laboratory in the world! CERN, take part!

As an Electrical Safety Engineer, you will join:
CERN's Occupational Health & Safety and Environmental Protection Unit (HSE), the Organization's centre of competence in matters of safety. The Health and Safety Unit supports the Organization in striving and maintaining excellence in safety, an indispensable requirement for sustainable research.

The HSE unit contributes to CERN's safety policy, writes CERN specific safety rules and coordinates CERN's HSE matters with the respective Host State bodies. The HSE unit advises CERN's management, supports facility operators and project leaders in identifying safety risks and state of the art solutions, whilst monitoring the efficiency of the implemented measures. The HSE unit is responsible for advice in occupational health & safety, environmental protection and is fully accountable for radiation protection and for CERN's Fire Brigade.

As an Electrical Engineer, you will join the HSE unit, which supports CERN in the implementation and application of its safety policy, and the OHS Group, which is in charge of providing advice, monitoring and following-up on the implementation and accomplishment of safety objectives, aimed at a continuous improvement of a safe working environment. Within the OHS group, you will join the Infrastructure & Building Safety Engineering (IB) Section.

Functions:
As an Electrical Engineer in the IB Section, you will take up the role of CERN specialist for electrical safety, joining a multidisciplinary team of safety experts, among which other electrical engineers, covering several engineering domains.

You will:
- Contribute to general and specific projects aimed at improving electrical safety at CERN;
- Organize with contractors and carry out regular safety inspections of electrical installations; make recommendations/actions through the production of inspection reports, and the implementation of preventive and corrective actions;
- Contribute to the projects/experiments safety support activity of the HSE-OHS Group, internally coordinating different safety specialists' contributions;
- Support the development, check and verify design calculations prepared by different CERN technical departments. This activity can relate to highly specialised equipment, not fully covered by common standards;

Experience in:
- Verification of electrical distribution networks and equipment;
- The manufacturing phase would be an advantage;
- The analyses of electrical circuit: ability to assess the conformity of a design with applicable safety standards and principles.

Technical competencies:
- Occupational safety and risk management: familiarity with qualitative and quantitative electrical risk assessment;
- Construction, test and commissioning of electrical circuits and networks
- Drafting and writing of official documents: (technical documentation)
- Knowledge of national legislation (Switzerland and France) and European rules in electrical design & risk assessment of equipment. Knowledge of relevant IEC standards would be an asset;

Behavioural competencies:
- Communicating Effectively: demonstrating a pro-active approach to resolving differences; addressing issues of conflict constructively
