Arbetsbeskrivning

Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology
The Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology was founded in the late 1970s - when the College of Forestry moved to Umeå. The number of employees has since grown steadily is now around 100, including postdoctoral researchers and postgraduate students. In the late 1990s it was decided to join with the Department of Plant Physiology at Umeå University to form a research center, Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC). The Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology moved into the premises adjacent to the partner department and together have developed a close and successful collaboration on research issues, technology platforms, and training of master's and doctoral level students. The international element within UPSC is large, with over 40 nationalities represented. The department conducts introductory and advanced training in plant physiology, ecophysiology, plant molecular biology, forest genetics and forest biotechnology within the Forestry program and at the master level. The department offers postgraduate studies in biology, specializing in plant physiology, ecophysiology, plant molecular biology and forest genetics. Postgraduate courses are generally held in cooperation with the Department of Plant Physiology. To strengthen innovation of biological production using the latest advances in genomic sciences, the Knut and Wallenberg foundation (KAW) and Kempe foundation have supported Postdoc positions.  The forest genomic projects target innovation in tree species including conifer genome sequencing and re-sequencing to identify genome evolution and develop SNP array, GWAS to detect genomic base of observed variation in adaptive and economically important tree traits, and genomic selection for genetic improvement. We are looking for Postdocs to conduct research on conifer genomic science and genomic selection in Norway spruce and Scots pine.

Duties:
Understanding genomic base of trait variation and selection based on genome sequencing is a new frontier research area for genetic improvement of animal and plant. You will participate genomics projects of Norway spruce and Scots pine including: (1) Bioinformatics analyses of re-sequencing, exome sequencing and SNP array data and pipeline development for conifers; (2) Phenotyping and data analyses for adaptive and economically important tree traits; (3) Genome-wide association study for quantitative traits including phenology, flower, solid-wood, pulping, bio-energy, disease and adaptive traits; (4) Application of genomic selection to conifer trees.

Qualifications:
Highly motivated and team-oriented candidates with experience in biology, bioinformatics, genome/exome sequencing, computer programming or quantitative and population genetics. To qualify, you should have a PhD degree in subjects relevant for the position. Good English communication and writing skills are required.
