Arbetsbeskrivning

Position description
The appointment aims to strengthen the competence and strategic leadership in fundamental Computer Science, which is part of the Computer and Data Science (CDS) research direction, and of the Trusted Smart Systems (TSS) profile area in MDU's strategy. One purpose of this recruitment is to extend the fundamental research of CDS and TSS with respect to providing mathematically grounded theories for developing sophisticated algorithms for real-world problems. This includes mathematical modelling of algorithmic approaches, estimation of the complexity of computational problems, and understanding the limits of efficient computation through computational complexity.

The research focus of this professorship should be in one or several branches of current algorithms research and beyond, for example, algorithms on graphs and data structures/model-checking algorithms, distributed algorithms, networking algorithms, online algorithms, algorithmic game theory, randomized algorithms, probabilistic analysis of algorithms and approximation algorithms, algorithmic foundations of machine learning and artificial intelligence, as well as the computational complexity of problems on discrete structures.

Main duties include:

• Research
• Supervision of doctoral students and junior researchers
• Collaboration with external academic and industrial partners
• Responsibility for strengthening the Algorithms and Complexity research within CDS and TSS
• Taking a leading role in the formulation of funding proposals and leading research projects
• Teaching mainly related to Algorithms and Complexity, Data Structures at PhD and Master level

Taking a leading role in the development of courses related to Theoretical Computer Science.

Qualification requirements
Academic skills will have been demonstrated by independent research work which to a significant degree exceeds the requirements for docent competence (see the University’s Guidelines for assessment of docent competence).

Importance is also attached to the planning and leading of research. Academic skills may also have been demonstrated by the ability to achieve results in research through cooperation in joint projects of benefit to academia and to industry/the public sector/society in general and through the ability to disseminate research.

Teaching skills will have been demonstrated by teaching at first-cycle as well as third-cycle levels. The assessment of teaching skills shall apply to the planning, carrying out and evaluation of teaching as well as supervision and examination. Teaching skills shall be documented in such a way that their quality can also be assessed.

The applicant should have completed ten weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge. A person appointed as a Professor but lacking training in higher education teaching and learning will be offered in-house training within two and a half years. The course in higher education teaching and learning at Mälardalen University corresponds to ten weeks of training.

The applicant should have documented proficiency in successful collaboration with academic and industrial partners.

The applicant should have documented proficiency in leading larger research or collaboration efforts.

The applicant should have documented proficiency in acquiring external funding at both national and international level.

For other information, consult the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4, and the Appointments Procedure for Mälardalen University.

Assessment criteria
The assessment criteria shall be based on the degree of skills required for the appointment. In general terms these assessment criteria shall include the ability to cooperate as well as the ability and suitability otherwise required to fulfil the duties well.

The same attention shall be paid to the assessment of teaching skills as to the assessment of academic skills.

Ability to communicate in fluent English both orally and in writing.

Ability to think strategically and meet strategic goals.

Ability to lead others towards joint objectives, together with ability to cooperate with others in different contexts.

Decisive importance is attached to personal suitability. We value the qualities that an even distribution of age and gender, as well as ethnic and cultural diversity, can contribute to the organisation.

Merit
We value leadership and collaboration abilities, together with a strong academic and industrial network, as well as ability to establish and maintain such networks.
