The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Machine Interlocks Engineer.

Description of directorate/division
As machine interlocks engineer you will be part of ESS's Machine Directorate, which is responsible to deliver the accelerator and the target station. You will join the Integrated Control Systems (ICS) division, responsible for the design, construction, commissioning and operation of control systems for the ESS facility including the accelerator, target station, neutron scattering instruments and conventional facilities. The Integrated Control System monitors and controls most of the operational aspects. We cover a wide range of sensing, control and automation technology from highly customized electronics specific for ESS applications to standardized PLCs controlling building automation. The hardware scope contains of a mixture from entirely in-house hardware development, through community-style development in standardized open-source code bases to adaption and configuration of off-the shelf commercial systems.

In particular you will join the Protection Systems Group whose mandate covers the design, realization, operation and consolidation of the ESS Machine Protection and Personnel Safety Systems.

Main Responsibilities


• Coordinate and lead the design, development, and implementation of mission-critical electronic interlock systems
• Coordinate the verification of systems requirements including analysis, inspection, demonstration and testing
• Coordinate the systems validation through commissioning for operations
• Act as Technical Advisor for the ESS Machine Protection Committee
• Coordinate and actively participate in the integration of accelerator equipment/systems into the overall ESS Machine Protection Strategy
• Maintain the risk register for Machine Protection and be actively involved in its completion

Required Qualifications


• Educational

• D. in Electronic Engineering, Controls or a related field.

• Work Experience

• Extensive hands-on experience with designing, developing, implementing, operating and/or optimizing interlock systems (using programmable logic)
• Fluent in VHDL and/or scripting languages
• Experience in the field of developing and evaluating dependable architectures and designs for complex systems
• Familiarity with different hazard and risk analysis techniques and tools
• Experience with technology evaluation
• Experience with requirements solicitation and verification
• Ability to design, debug, and test interlock system components thoroughly
• Ability to teach, mentor, communicate to the point, and defend technical concepts and solutions

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.

The European Spallation Source ERIC will design, build and operate a multi-disciplinary, large-scale research infrastructure based on the world’s most powerful neutron source. European Spallation Source, ESS, will provide scientists with unique and powerful neutron scattering instruments for the study of a large range of materials – from polymers and pharmaceuticals to membranes and molecules. ESS project is partnered by 17 European countries, and hosted by Sweden and Denmark. ESS will be built in Lund, Sweden, by a collaboration of European scientists and engineers. ESS is planned to produce the first neutrons by 2019. When the facility is in full operation 2025, ESS has around 450 employees.
