Mechanical Engineer (Silicon Tracking Systems)

Arbetsbeskrivning

Company Description:
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description/Introduction:
Are you a Mechanical Engineer with a passion for challenging and exciting projects in the field of particle physics experiments? Then seize the opportunity and join the ATLAS team in CERN's Experimental Physics Department and contribute to the development and construction of the next generation silicon tracker for the ATLAS experiment, the Inner Tracker (ITk).

You will join:
- The Experimental Physics (EP) Department which carries out basic research in the field of experimental particle physics in a stimulating scientific atmosphere, standing as an important reference for the European physics community. It also contributes to the education and training of young scientists.
- The Project Office section of the CERN ATLAS team is in charge of operating, maintaining and upgrading mechanical infrastructure and detector.

Functions/Specific functions of this job will be:
- Deputy of the ITk Common Mechanics activity coordinator, managing the common mechanics activities, schedule and risk register. Understanding of ITk sub-detector local support structures, development of ITk sub-detector global support structures and their integration and interfaces to other detectors and structures in the ATLAS experiment. Prepare agendas for meetings and reports on the activities.
- Responsible for the ITk off-detector services, installation and connectivity in the ATLAS cavern and in the surface integration facility, follow up on industrial contracts, as well as definition of powering racks and service routing. Provide regular reports on progress and planning and prepare reviews.
- Acting as engineer-in-charge in the preparations of the ATLAS Inner Detector (ID) decommissioning procedure, including documentation, schedule preparations and radiation dose estimations. Training of the staff involved in the decommissioning on mock-up tests.
- Supervise engineers and technicians involved in the ITk project and interface with ATLAS Technical Coordination.
- Provide engineering support for the Beam Condition Monitor (BCM') project on the layout, structure and interfaces to ITk as well as electronic mapping and service routing. Manage engineering supervision in the design, construction, and primarily installation of the shielding.
- Organize workshops related to the ID decommissioning, and ITk integration, installation and commissioning.

Qualifications:
PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

Experience:
- Post-doctoral experience in the field of design, construction and assembly of large mechanical systems for particle physics detectors.
- Experience in the field of mechanical engineering, integration and services for silicon tracking systems.
- Experience in project management, planning and procurement for components of silicon tracking systems, ie services and mechanical parts.
- Experience in providing engineering support to sub-projects in a particle experiment for mechanical and service related items.

Experience in the following fields will be considered as an asset:
- Experience in working in a multi-disciplinary team, supervising engineers and technicians involved in work on particle detector systems.

Technical competencies:
- Integration of mechanical systems: in particular of mechanical structures for silicon tracking systems and definition of interfaces to other systems.
- Assembly and integration of infrastructure for detectors or experimental facilities: definition and installation of services including connectivity.
- Decommissioning and disposal of detector components and systems: ie definition of procedures and development of mock-ups as well as dose monitoring systems.
- Organisation, planning and control: including supervision of technicians and engineers.

Behavioural competencies:
- Achieving results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind.
- Demonstrating accountability: presenting information accurately and objectively; taking responsibility for own actions and decisions.
- Demonstrating flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements; demonstrating a willingness to accept changing circumstances; supporting initiatives for change; being willing to work on different projects simultaneously.
- Learning and sharing knowledge: proposing ways to improve or streamline existing procedures, processes and methodologies.
- Working in teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities.

Language skills:
Spoken and written English: ability to understand and speak in professional context, to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations. Basic knowledge of French will be an advantage.
