Mechanical Technician and Workshop Supervisor

Arbetsbeskrivning

Company Description
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
Job Description
Introduction

Are you a mechanical technician with experience in mechanical assembly and supervision of the day-to-day activities of the workshop? Then seize this opportunity to be part of a team in charge of the mechanical production and assembly of standard or prototype target and ion source units required for the ISOLDE physics program and for machine development. Work in the heart of the laboratory's core business! CERN, take part!

You will join the Accelerator Systems Department (SY), which is responsible for the beam-related technical systems of the CERN accelerators. The SY teams design, build and operate equipment systems in all CERN accelerators, and are engaged in ambitious forward-looking R&D programmes.

The Sources, Targets and Interactions Group (STI) has a broad expertise on the interaction of beams with matter and applies its know-how to a large spectrum of activities including particle production, beam intercepting devices, studies on beam-matter interaction and nuclear engineering.

You will join the Radioactive Beam Sources Section (RBS), responsible for the fabrication of the Target and Ion Source Units, dedicated to the production of radioactive ion beams required for the physics programme of ISOLDE.

Functions

As Mechanical Technician and Workshop Supervisor, you will:

-Manufacture, on conventional machines (milling, turning) or using custom-made tools, prototypes and small series of mechanical parts, made of metal, plastic and composite materials;
-Manufacture (from the design to the part manufacture and integration into mechanical assemblies) highly specialized mechanical components based on drawings, sketches or oral instructions;
-Realize and test high-temperature ovens and ion-source prototypes made of refractory materials;
-Produce suitable documentation for parts manufactured and the obtained results from the validation tests;
-Ensure the availability of the ISOLDE mechanical workshop (scheduling of maintenance or repair, renewal of tools and stocks) and its compliance to applicable safety rules;
-Participate to the repair and maintenance of activated and contaminated pieces of equipment in CERN accelerator tunnels or nuclear laboratories.

Qualifications
Higher technical diploma or equivalent relevant experience in the field of mechanics, machining or a related field.

Experience:

Required experience in:

-Precision mechanics;
-Mechanical assembly and fitting; machining of metallic components (traditional, non-CNC milling and turning).

Desired experience:

-Machining of refractory materials like tungsten, tantalum, niobium, molybdenum as well as special materials as titanium, graphite, boron nitride, PEEK would be an asset;
-Knowledge of vacuum systems, material science and elementary science would be an added advantage.

Technical competencies:

-Knowledge and application of manufacturing methods and work preparation, in particular high-precision mechanical engineering and metrology;
-Assembly of mechanical structures and equipment;
-Production of 2D drawings and 3D models, in particular ability to read/interpret technical drawings and ISO tolerancing (dimensional and geometrical product specification standards), ability of drafting technical drawings using standard CAD tools;
-Knowledge and application of additive-manufacturing techniques.

Behavioural competencies:

-Communicating effectively: expressing opinions, ideas and suggestions with conviction and in a logical/structured manner; keeping to the point; ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented; providing others with timely information.
-Achieving results: delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations; having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind.
-Demonstrating flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements.
-Working in teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships.

Language skills:

Spoken and written English or French: ability to understand and speak the other language in routine situations.
