Mechanical technician for the CMS Experiment at the LHC

Arbetsbeskrivning

Company Description:
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description/Introduction:
Are you an experienced mechanical technician with experience in heavy logistics, operation and maintenance of complex assemblies? Are you interested in the development of innovative systems, involving novel concepts, materials and extremely challenging requirements?

You will join the CERN Experimental Physics Department (EP) to work in the CMS Experiment Systems Group (CMX) Safety, Coordination and Integration (SCI) section.

CMS is one of the four large experiments of the LHC at CERN. The CMS detector weighs around 14000 tonnes and is divided into large moveable segments, weighing up to 2000 tonnes, that facilitate maintenance and upgrade of the equipment. Within the EP-CMX-SCI section, you will be part of the CMS Technical Coordination team, including technicians, engineers and physicists who are in charge of all technical aspects related to the operation, maintenance, and upgrade of the CMS detector. This includes configuration changes and installation of new detectors on the Cessy site (France), both on the surface and 100m underground.

Functions:
As a mechanical technician in the EP-CMX-SCI section, working within the CMS Technical Coordination team, you will:
- Participate actively in the assembly/disassembly of the detector, including opening and closing of the large CMS components using screw jacks, hydraulic jacks, strand-jack system and high-pressure air-pads.
- Maintain the dedicated tools, improve them or design new ones.
- Take responsibility for the mechanical workshop at the CMS site (maintenance, operation)
- Supervise the on-site activities of the collaboration technicians and/or external suppliers.
- Interpret 2D/3D designs and construct tooling/mechanical pieces accordingly. The ability to perform 2D/3D design would be an advantage.

Qualifications:
Higher technical diploma or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Mechanics or electro-mechanics or a related field.

Welding certificate would be a plus. Scaffolding certificate would be a plus

Experience in construction, assembly and handling of large size and heavy mechanical assemblies

- Demonstrated experience in running a mechanical workshop (use of tools and machines, maintenance of equipment, safety, validation of procedures)
- Initial experience in operation and maintenance of hydraulic and pneumatic systems
- Initial experience in supervision of technical teams
- Initial experience in welding and/or scaffolding assembly will be a plus

Technical competencies:
- Operation and maintenance of lifting and handling equipment
- Assembly of mechanical structures and equipment
- Knowledge and application of manufacturing methods and work preparation
- Manufacturing of mechanical parts
- Production of 2D drawings and 3D models: to be able to interpret 2D/3D designs and construct tooling/mechanical pieces accordingly

Behavioural competencies:
- Achieving Results: delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations Having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind
