Mechatronics Engineer – Chopper control

The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Mechatronics Engineer – Chopper control, automation and integration.

Description of main responsibilities:

The successful candidate will work with design, development and support of control system solutions for Neutron Choppers at the ESS Neutron Scattering Instrumentation:


• Develop, test and commission motion control and monitor electronics for Mechatronics test benches for Neutron Choppers and other instruments devices, define the SW+HW interface to the ESS Integrated Control System
• Support the processes necessary (requirements, market survey, concept decision, prototype, test, pre-series) to develop a standardized control system
• Continuously integrate special cutting-edge requirements (motors, encoders, sensors, extreme environment, robotics) into the system.
• Support the instruments design process by evaluating and determining appropriate control and automation technologies
• Compile the documentation and transfer to technical personnel the necessary know-how for installation and service

Qualifications:

Technical competencies:


• Engineers degree in Mechatronics.
• 5 years of experience in architecture design, develop, integrate, commission and troubleshoot control systems in large scale facilities preferably in a research environment.
• Deep knowledge and experience of hardware and software for industrial automation (PLC, I/O, sensors, safety HW, etc.)
• Deep Knowledge and experience in SCADA systems and open source platforms.
• Experience in signal analysis and condition monitoring systems.
• Experience in electrical design and installations for hands-on prototyping.
• Experience in controlling and monitoring of high speed motors and drives.
• Experience in HMI or GUI design.
• As this position implies working on the interface between mechanics and electronics interdisciplinary comprehension and knowledge are essential.
• Experience of working in an international environment is essential.
• Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.

Detailed competencies:


• Demonstrated experience in EPICS integration, configuration and control for neutron instrumentation for large scale facilities.
• Demonstrated experience integrating of Beckhoff PLC systems into EPICS, courses TR2020 and TR3030 would be an advantage.
• Demonstrated experience in IEC 61131-3 programming standard.
• Demonstrated experience in Industrial communication protocols (Modbus, EtherCAT, OPC, etc)
• Experience in precise timing synchronization.
• Experience in control and integration of neutron chopper drives/controllers into PLC systems.
• Experience in troubleshoot and operation of neutron chopper control systems.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.

Start date
The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
