Mechatronics Technician

Arbetsbeskrivning

Company Description
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
Job Description
Introduction

Are you a skilled electromechanical technician with experience in developing and/or maintaining control systems for large complex devices?

Then seize the opportunity and join the Detector Technology group operating at the heart of CERN's Experimental Physics Department. Within our team, you will contribute to the design, development, construction and testing of challenging control systems for physics experiments, their powerful magnets and infrastructure. Take part!

You will join:

-The Experimental Physics (EP) Department, which carries out basic research in the field of experimental particle physics in a stimulating scientific atmosphere, standing as an important reference for the physics community. It also contributes to the education and training of young scientists.
-The Detector Technologies (DT) group, in charge of the development, construction, operation and maintenance of particle detectors and their technical infrastructure for the LHC experiments and several other experiments at CERN.
-The Detector Interface section, which provides solutions for infrastructure and detector control and safety systems as well as data acquisition systems for physics experiments. The particularity of the section is that it combines hardware, control systems, information and communication technologies expertise, thus being able to provide complete solutions, from the field to the user interfaces, including operations and support.

Functions

Your main activities will consist of:

-Operating, maintaining and upgrading the control and safety systems of the magnets of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiments, as well as their ancillary systems (vacuum, heaters, batteries, etc.).
-Taking part in a 24/7 on-call service for the experimental magnets and detector safety systems of the four large LHC experiments.
-Contributing to the development, installation, operation and maintenance industrial data-acquisition, monitoring and control systems for experimental facilities.
-Laying out, constructing, testing and commissioning low voltage electrical circuits and networks.
-Implementing safety interlock systems.

Qualifications
Technical certificate or general secondary education or equivalent relevant experience in the field of mechatronics or a related field.

Experience:

This job requires:

-Experience in operating and maintaining large electromechanical equipment and control systems.
-Demonstrated experience in laying out, implementing and commissioning low voltage electrical distribution systems.
-Experience in design and assembly of control circuits and instrumentation interfaces.
-Initial experience in PLC programming and development of user interfaces in SCADA frameworks.
-Experience in participating to 24/7 on call services would be an advantage.

Technical competencies:

-Installation, operation and maintenance of industrial data-acquisition, monitoring and control systems: : this encompasses hardware, PLC programming and development/modification of simple SCADA systems.
-Design and modelling of low-voltage electrical circuits and networks: : this requires the knowledge of design tools such as CAD electrical design software.
-Construction, test and installation of electromechanical equipment and systems: : manufacturing basic mechanical pieces, assembling electro-mechanical sub-systems.
-Operation and maintenance of large electromechanical equipment and systems, such as large normal- and super-conducting magnets.

Behavioural competencies:

-Achieving results: delivering prompt and efficient service taking into account customer needs.
-Demonstrating flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements; demonstrating a willingness to accept changing circumstances; supporting initiatives for change.
-Solving problems: producing workable and timely solutions that meet requirements.
-Working in teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships.

Language skills:

Spoken and written English or French: ability to understand and speak the other language in routine situations or willingness to learn it.
