The Swedish Committee for Afghanistan is looking for Assistant Technical Advisor in Prosthetics and Orthotics Duty station: Kabul Afghanistan Scope of Work Rehabilitation for Afghans with Disabilities (RAD) is one of four programmes run by Swedish Committee for Afghanistan (SCA), a non-governmental organization working in Afghanistan since 1982. RAD programme follows a community-based rehabilitation approach and works in 13 provinces with 4 regional offices in Taloqan, Ghazni, Jalalabad and Mazar-e Sharif as well as a technical unit based in the main office in Kabul. One of five components in RAD, the prosthetic and orthotic services are based in 4 orthopaedic workshops and one component workshop in the 4 regional offices with a total staff of 90 technicians and artisans. The workshops have been established for more than 12 years and the Afghan staff trained to make and fit prostheses, orthoses and mobility aids from polypropolene and other locally available materials. Now there is a need to strengthen the quality of the prescription and clinical work and to harmonize the skills and production in all 4 centres. RAD is searching for a P/O advisor with skills and experience who would enjoy the challenge of improving P/O standards in a challenging environment. Essential Job Functions . Cooperate with and give technical support to the national P/O advisor and to the regional P/O supervisors and technicians. . Assist in planning and organization of further education programme for RAD orthopaedic workshop staff. This should be done after a thorough assessment of knowledge level and training needs of staff, taking in consideration the specific needs of people with disabilities in Afghanistan . Work alongside orthopaedic technicians at the RAD orthopaedic workshops to improve clinical prescription and fitting. . Organize upgrading modules for prosthetic and orthotic technicians, technician assistants and trainees in 4 centres with a multi-disciplinary approach and using appropriate technology . Work closely with the physiotherapists in RAD and with the other staff in the programme to improve programme coordination and standards. . To assist and advise the development of good quality production in the component workshop . Be prepared to travel in the field and stay for several weeks at a time in each workshop. . Assist in developing better methods for assessments and production of devices and documentation (worksheets, reports, record systems etc). . Disseminate information and updating of international developments within prosthetics and orthotics that are relevant to the programme, such as new techniques, theories and relevant literature. . Coordinate with other organizations that provide P&O in Afghanistan and cooperate in planning further education for P/O staff on a national basis. Entry Requirements Qualifications: . Orthotic and prosthetic Engineer, MSc, BSc or equivalent certifcate . Education and practice in P&O, experience in training and supervision of technical staff. . Be updated in international developments in P&O field in particular ISPO approaches and methods, . Experience from P&O practice developing countries preferred . Experience in production of components for O&P and mobility devices such as caliper sidebars, prosthetic feet and wheelchairs, . Be fluent in English. Contract period: 2 year, with 6 months probation period Duties to begin as agreed.
