PhD position in Multiscale Methods for Partial Differential Equations

We will recruit one doctoral students in mathematics to work under the supervision of Irina Pettersson and Tobias Gebäck in the project concerning mathematical models and numerical methods for applications in electrophysiology. This branch of physiology studies the electrical properties of biological cells and tissues. The study will in particular employ asymptotic analysis and homogenization techniques in order to derive macroscopic models for the electric potential in biological tissues, as well as numerical solutions of these problems.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg has about 200 employees and is the largest department of mathematics in Sweden. The department has three scientific divisions: Algebra and Geometry, Analysis and Probability Theory, and Applied Mathematics and Statistics and conducts successful research in pure and applied mathematics and mathematical statistics in a wide range of research areas. We have an international environment with frequent exchanges with other universities around the world. At the division of Applied Mathematics and Statistics we conduct research within the theory and implementation of finite element methods, inverse wave propagation problems, stochastic partial differential equations, geometric numerical integration, optimization, biomathematics, biostatistics, spatial modeling, Bayesian inference, high-dimensional data, large-scale computational methods, and bioinformatics. The division is also expanding in the area of data science and machine learning.

Major responsibilities
You will be enrolled in a graduate program in Applied Mathematics at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Chalmers University of Technology. As a Ph.D. student, you are expected to develop your own ideas and communicate scientific results orally as well as in written form. In addition, the position will normally include 20 % departmental work, mostly teaching duties.

Qualifications
A successful candidate must have a strong background in mathematics. You must have obtained a master's degree in mathematics, applied mathematics or in a related topic, or expect to complete such a degree by September 1, 2024.

Experience in one or several of the following areas may be meritorious: partial differential equations, numerical analysis, computational methods for partial differential equations, stochastic analysis and programming.

Good presentation and communication skills in oral and written English are required.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
