Arbetsbeskrivning
In this project we will investigate the possibilities of using chromatography for pre-separation and/or purification of specific components from primary separation of wood. Initially some relevant components for further studies will be chosen. Possible candidates include xylan, lignin and low molecular weight material. Appropriate sorbents will be evaluated theoretically and experimentally. Laboratory scale chromatography equipment will be constructed. Separation efficiency is studied for the selected components/sorbents. The experiments are evaluated using chromatography theory and mathematical modeling. In a later stage scale-up and various operational aspects like robustness and optimal conditions are studied. The project is part of the Wallenberg Wood Science Center and is funded by the Wallenberg Foundation. Description of the position The position is limited to maximum five years and corresponds to full-time research studies during four years. In addition, teaching in the undergraduate or masters curriculi at Chalmers could be included corresponding to one year, teaching work distributed over the whole time of the position. A suitable background is Master of Science (Swedish: civilingenjör) in Chemical Engineering or Chemical Engineering with Physics (Kf); specifically with interest in wood chemistry, transport phenomena and applied mathematics.
