PhD Student position in Hydropower

In Sweden, most of the large turbines were built between 1940s and 1970s, therefore an important period of renovation has started. The refurbishment has to be done in conjunction with state of the art in turbine technology to obtain the best availability, reliability and efficiency. To this purpose, the department of Applied Physics and Mechanical Engineering, Luleå University of Technology (LTU), is working actively in the dynamic characterization of full-scale hydropower systems in collaboration with Vattenfall, Alstom and GE Hydro.
The division of Fluid Mechanics, part of the Department of Applied Physics and Mechanical Engineering, has now a position open for a new PhD student. The project is interdisciplinary and encompasses the fields of hydraulic, power generation, tribology and rotor-dynamic.The student will work in an exiting and growing environment using the latest techniques within the previous mentioned area in collaboration with other divisions at LTU (Machine Elements and Solid Mechanics) and with the possibility to develop contacts world-wide within as well industry as academy.

Project description: The work will essentially be experimental and comprise the measurements of several parameters and their analysis on a full-scale hydropower machine at Porjus, Sweden, to characterize its dynamic in order to develop rotor-dynamic models to increase availability and reliability.

Qualifications: Specialization in Energy or Hydropower is a merit, otherwise according to The Higher Education Act and Ordinance for research education from the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education,
