PhD Student Positions in Satellite Atmospheric Science

Lulea University of Technology is recruiting up to three new PhD students for the Satellite Atmospheric Science (SAT) group, which belongs to the Institute of Space Science (IRV) at Kiruna Space Campus. The institute belongs to Luleå University of Technology, but collaborates also closely with the Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF).Both institutions have not only a focus on space, but also a focus on environmental science, in particular atmospheric science. The SAT group is using and developing space technology to study Earth's atmosphere. We offer an open and friendly work environment with a strong focus on research.More information can be found on the websites http://www.sat.ltu.se (working group), http://www.ltu.se/irv (IRV), and http://www.irf.se (IRF).

Research areas

As described in more detail on the SAT group website, the group focuses on the research areas radiative transfer, humidity and cloud research, development of new satellite sensors, development of retrieval algorithms for satellite data, and development and application of in-situ probes for cloud microphysics research.

The research directions of the new PhD students are not fixed, but should be in one of the following areas:

radiative transfer modeling
evaluation of climate models with satellite data
remote sensing of humidity, clouds, and precipitation
numerical modeling of ice crystal growth with cellular automata
development of cheap and lightweight cloud ice particle probes
Duration and Duties

The PhD positions are for four years and are associated with a full-time position with a commensurate salary. The duties are 80% research and 20% teaching and other department duties.

Requirements

To apply, you should have a good or excellent Master or equivalent degree. You should also have traceable experience in atmospheric science and remote sensing, as well as a good background in physics and mathematics.Furthermore, you should have good English skills and good computer skills, including some programming experience.Swedish skills will be considered an additional bonus. You should be capable of independent, original, and creative research work, but at the same time be a good team player.

Female candidates are particularly encouraged to apply, since we are aiming to increase the fraction of women in the group. We value diversity, so candidates belonging to minorities are particularly encouraged to apply.

Application

Applications marked with ref.no.The application should state clearly the desired research area.It should include a letter of motivation, a CV, telephone numbers of two references, and copies of relevant degree documents (Master, etc.).Letters of recommendation may be included, but are not mandatory. You may also send separately the pdf file of a recent publication.
