Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences Department of Microbiology, Uppsala Postdoctoral position in microbiology - molecular studies of methanogenic consortia SLU develops knowledge about natural resources as well as social systems - everything that lives and grows.At SLU we conduct research, teach and inform about the opportunities, and possible risks incurred, when using our forests, landscapes, soils and animals in different ways.The Faculty of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences is the largest of the four faculties of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Sweden.The faculty, which is located in Uppsala 65 km north of Stockholm, covers a wide range of disciplines, spanning over agriculture, food and biotechnology to natural resources, environment and veterinary and human medicine. Main campuses are located at Alnarp, Skara, Ultuna and Umeå.Research and teaching activities are carried out throughout the country.www.slu.se The Department of Microbiology, www.mikrob.slu.se, has about 70 employees, including about 20 PhD students, active within the two main research areas Environmental Microbiology and Food and Feed Microbiology.Scientists at the Department are directing three major research programs: Uppsala Microbiomics Center, www.microbiomics.se, Domestication of Microorganisms (DOM), www.mistra.org/dom, and Microbially Derived Energy (MicroDrivE), http://microdrive.slu.se.The Department has modern fermentation equipment, realtime PCR, HPLC- and gas chromatographs, flow cytometer, state-of-the-art freeze drying and DSC equipment etc, and has as member of BioCenter-SLU, http://bioc.slu.se, access to advanced NMR- and masspectrometry.The Department maintains a highly active, international research collaboration and has many joint research projects with the biotech and bioenergy industry, which has contributed to a strong innovation culture.The biogas group within MicroDrivE has isolated several new species able to increase methane yields under stress condition.A post-doctoral position is now available to study interactions within such methanogenic consortia at the molecular level. Applicants should have a Ph D degree in microbiology not older than three years, and have a strong background in molecular techniques.Experience in cultivation of strict anaerobes is valued.
