Postdoctoral position in Physics: Combustion Physics

Arbetsbeskrivning

LTH forms the Faculty of Engineering at Lund University, with approximately 9 000 students. The research carried out at LTH is of a high international standard and we are continuously developing our teaching methods and adapting our courses to current needs.

The Department of Physics is with a staff of about 350 scientists and educators one of the largest departments within Lund University. There are seven research divisions and a number of research centra within the department. The research activities at the department cover a broad spectrum of modern physics. www.fysik.lu.se/english.

Subject area
Laser diagnostics and turbulent combustions (with focus on laser combustion diagnostics, instantaneous flame structure analysis).

Specific subject description
The position will be directed towards development of experimental methods for investigations of turbulent combustion in general and at elevated pressures in specific, mainly employing laser/optical diagnostics.

Job specification
The main duties involved in a post-doctoral posistion is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position shall include the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.

The research activities will aim at achieving better understanding of phenomena related to turbulent combustion at elevated pressures. A main emphasis with the work is to design experimental methods for investigating the physics and chemistry of turbulent combustions to be established in an existing high pressure rig using the optical diagnostic tools.

Eligibility requirements
Qualified for the position as postdoctoral fellow is a person who holds a doctorate or a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent to a doctorate and who has completed the degree within the three years prior to the last date for applications, unless there are valid reasons.

Special requirements for this position:

- a PhD in a relevant area
- a proven record in the area of laser-based combustion diagnostics
- a proven record in the laboratory experience with combustion at elevated pressures.
- fluency in English, written as well as spoken

Assessment criteria
This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

- A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
- Teaching skills.

Additional assessment criteria:

- experience from combustion at elevated pressures
- experience from laser/optical diagnostics
- experience from turbulent combustion characterizations
- experience from collaboration with other disciplines
- willingness to and experience from teamwork

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant through his/her personality, experience and competence is assessed to complement and strengthen the ongoing research at the Divison of Combustion Physics.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of a maximum of 2 years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”) between Lund University, SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated 4 September 2008.

Instructions on how to apply
Applications shall be written in English. LTH uses a special qualifications portfolio to report and document qualifications. Draw up the application in accordance with the following outline and attach it as three PDF files (in the recruitment system). Read more here: http://www.lth.se/index.php?id=71223
