Principal Research Engineer in population genetics

Principal Research Engineer in population genetics

Arbetsbeskrivning

Skilled and committed employees are a crucial factor in the success of Linköping University. And we need more of them. Our core expertise comes from teachers and researchers, but a successful university requires experienced and motivated employees in many fields. Everyone is important. We need to recruit many new employees thanks to, among all, an expansion in our research activity. We need you here. We look forward to receiving your application!

The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology conducts research and offers education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Research, the predominant activity, is often done in collaboration with corporate and international partners. We are one of the university’s largest, oldest and most well known departments, encompassing five interacting scientific fields: biology, chemistry, material physics, applied physics and theory and modelling.

We are looking for a Principal Research Engineer in population genetics.

Your future work assignments
Your tasks will consist of carrying out genetic analyses of populations of crop wild relatives within a larger project on crop wild relatives in the Nordic countries. The work will involve planning and independently carrying out molecular genetic laboratory work and, using bioinformatic methods, carrying out genetic analysis of diversity data, as well as scientifically publishing obtained results. The work will be carried out in communication with the project responsible, but with much freedom to independently plan and execute the research. The work tasks also include contributing towards grant application. Opportunities for fieldwork may be available to the person who so wishes.

Your future workplace
You will work at the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology - Biology Division.

The biology division carries out both basic and applied science, primarily within genetics, physiology, ethology and ecology. Examples are research about the genetic consequences of domestication of both domestic animals and plants, but also physiology and animal welfare, evolution and aging in experimental models and conservation ecology.

You will be working together with Jenny Hagenblad on a collaborative project about conservation of crop wild relatives, financed by the Nordic Council of Ministers. The project runs over four years and involves participants from all the Nordic countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland). Together with Hagenblad you will be responsible for one of the work packages within the project. Within the project there will be opportunities to participate in Nordic meetings and network with Nordic collaborators.

Your qualifications
We are looking for someone who has a PhD in Biology with documented experience in bioinformatic work with Next Generation Sequencing data and population genetic analyses of diversity data. Furthermore, you must also have demonstrated good abilities to independently plan and execute research within the field of population genetics.
You should have documented experience in molecular genetic laboratory work such as DNA extraction, PCR and the construction of genetic libraries, the identification of SNP variation from NGS data, and population genetic analyses with Bayesian methods.
In addition, you should have shown good abilities to communicate research results in English, orally and written, through scientific publications and oral presentations, for example at scientific conferences. Furthermore, you should be good at long-term planning, have good collaborative skills and be interested in both learning new scientific methods and sharing your knowledge with others.
Experience in plant species determination and biological field work and independently obtaining research funding is meriting.
