The Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (RWI) is an independent academic institution established in 1984.The purpose of the Institute is to promote research, training and academic education in the fields of human rights and humanitarian law and to initiate, develop, and support other activities in these fields.In fulfilling its mandate, the Institute collaborates with a number of academic institutions and international organisations dealing with human rights and humanitarian law.The Institute organises capacity development programmes for the promotion of human rights standards and democratic values in a number of developing countries primarily with the support of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).The post is a permanent position, with a six month probation period, starting end of 2006 at the earliest. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The Programme Officer, under the overall supervision of Professor Burdekin and in cooperation with other NHRI staff, would primarily be responsible for the planning, coordination, management, implementation and monitoring of RWI NHRI projects and training courses as part of the Institute's development cooperation activities.This includes travelling to project/programme sites to facilitate the implementation of project objectives and to assess and report on project developments and results.The Programme Officer is moreover expected to follow developments generally regarding NHRI matters and specifically in countries and regions where RWI is active.In addition, the work entails drafting proposals, including budgets, for new NHRI activities and preparing narrative reports for completed projects.Qualifications: - University degree in law or equivalent with a specialisation in human rights law or other human rights related fields; - A minimum of two to three years professional experience in the human rights field, including project management, is required; particular experience working with or knowledge of NHRIs is highly desirable; - Demonstrable organisational, analytical, communication and interpersonal skills; - Flexibility and ability to work independently and under pressure with limited time frames; - Fluency in English required, and working knowledge of Swedish or French or Spanish desirable; - Cultural sensitivity and judgement and demonstrated ability and willingness to work as part of a team Ref.No NHRI.The application deadline is 29 October.
