Buckswood School is looking for a qualified riding instructor/stable manager who will teach riding and run the stables as a business within the school.
ADMINISTRATION: To report weekly. To oversee all matters pertaining to the running of the stables To fill in the weekly reporting sheet and hand it to the Headmaster (cc to Matron) To ensure that all accounts are kept and that lesson costs/stabling costs are regularly reviewed.
PROMOTION - INTERNAL: To promote the stables within the school to increase numbers of riders
and general interest in the stables This must include general posters, photos; daily announcements at the lunch break period forthcoming competitions etc. At present the stables seem to be a private club for a few (mainly day pupils). They should instead function as a facility for all, especially the 160 boarders.
PROMOTION-EXTERNAL: To promote the stables outside the school gate. No one knows we are here. The aim is to put us on the map and ensure that we join ALL local organisations.
HORSE WELFARE AND FACILITIES: To ensure that the horses and the facility are kept to a standard
required by both Buckswood and the Horse Riding Society. To ensure that the fields, sand school and stables are kept in good order AT ALL TIMES.
THE HORSE BOX:
The horsebox is a very large investment (and is a great marketing tool) and therefore should be used at least once a week for competitions or just generally to get off site.
EVENTS: To organise events both internally and externally. There should be at least one internal event per half of term which the school support and as
many external events/matches as possible. To organise new events (pat a pony over half term type of thing or other holiday half term ideas)
STAFFING: To oversee ALL staff. To manage them in an efficient way ensuring proper use of time. To liaise with Matron on weekly hours.
BUDGETS: To ensure that correct accounts are kept for all activities in the stables. To report weekly with your accounts. To ensure that recoverables
are give into the accounts department (ie lessons taught etc) To ensure that the school is getting a good deal on supplies. TO ENSURE THAT THE
STABLES START MAKING A PROFIT. (This will only happen through careful budgeting and more income, through more promotion and more general interest and therefore more lessons taught.
HOURS OF WORK (approximately)
20 hours week, clocking in daily, 9-12 Sat (junior boarders stables work and beginners hacking or take the horsebox out). Sun 11-16. Activities and hacking or mini internatl/external competitions or take the horsebox out. The other 11 hours - flexible to suit the needs of the job. However the best time to promote the stables and meet pupils is at 13.30 daily.
Pupils at Buckswood come from all over the world and most are boarders, this means that flexibility is required from staff members. You will gain a unique experience and an insight into a school world which is very different from the Swedish school system.
The school is situated just outside Uckfield, halfway between Brighton and London with good access to public transport. The school is unable to refund airfares but you will be met at the airport.
