Research Engineer BioMAX

Arbetsbeskrivning

MAX IV Laboratory has operated successfully for more than 30 years and is currently commissioning the new MAX IV synchrotron facility in Lund. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually, from Sweden and the rest of the world. They will do research in areas such as materials science, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. 200 people are currently employed at the MAX IV Laboratory.
MAX IV is the largest and most ambitious Swedish investment in national research infrastructure. It will be the brightest source of X-rays worldwide when inaugurated June 2016. MAX IV Laboratory is hosted by Lund University.

BioMAX - the first macromolecular crystallography beamline at MAX IV will be a high performance instrument supporting a multitude of modern experimental techniques.

The beamline will feature an experimental station, which will be equipped with nanometer precise goniometry, the most recent hybrid pixel detector technologies and sample robotics. BioMAX is currently in the early early stages of commissioning. The beamline is expected to get first users late 2016. The experimental station will enable to support different sample environments, from single loop mounted crystals, to more advanced sample setups including in situ diffraction experiments.

In order to develop and establish internal expertise in new sample delivery technologies, we are now seeking to hire a research engineer with a background and interest in X-ray synchrotron radiation based techniques and instrumentation.

Tasks

• You will contribute to the design, provision and the installation of new experimental environments in collaboration with the staff at the beamline, and within the established organization for beamline buildup at the MAX IV Laboratory. You are expected to take responsibility for particular development projects.
• You will participate in the commissioning of the beamline and its endstation.
• You will develop methods to support our microfocus beamline project MicroMAX.
• You will share responsibility for operation and maintenance with the team of scientists and engineers that will be built up around BioMAX.

Qualifications

The following qualifications are required:
• You hold a university degree in engineering or natural sciences in subjects of relevance for BioMAX.
• You have a solid experience in the planning, design/construction/purchase, operation and maintenance of complex scientific equipment in particular such equipment that is of relevance for the BioMAX endstation.
• You have a demonstrated knowledge of X-ray instrumentation and associated technique(s).
• You have a demonstrated ability to work independently.
• You have excellent command of English, communication skills, and team working skills.

The following qualifications are considered an asset:

• Experience in the design including 3d-construction, commissioning, and use of macromolecular experimental environments.
• Experiences in microfluidics.
• Experience with programing / interfacing of hardware.
• Experience with vacuum and cryogenics technologies.
• Experience of developing, assembling, running, and maintaining equipment for X-ray techniques.
• Interest/experience in use of techniques of interest for BioMAX (i.e. experiments, data analysis, publication / presentation of results).
• Experience with support of user groups at a synchrotron radiation facility or a similar user-oriented research facility.

This is a temporary contract for 2 years.

The University applies individual salaries. Please state requested salary in your application.
