The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology conducts research and offers education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Research, the predominant activity, is often done in collaboration with corporate and international partners. We are one of the university’s largest, oldest and most well known departments, encompassing five interacting scientific fields: biology, chemistry, material physics, applied physics and theory and modelling.
Read more at https://liu.se/en/organisation/liu/ifmWe are looking for a Research Engineer within the field of Sensors, Sensor Systems and Environmental Monitoring within the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology. 

The position
You will work as a research engineer and be actively involved in the design of experiments, testing of the sensor systems, measurements, and data evaluation. Your tasks include intensive laboratory and field measurements, performance validation of prototypal sensor systems, use of golden standards analytical techniques, and complex data analysis using linear regression models and other statistical methods. The work assignments comprise experimental activities both in the laboratory and field environment. Travelling both in Sweden and abroad is included in your work assignments. Your main work assignments will concern, but not be limited to, all research activities and related tasks within the H2020-ICT-2018-20 EU-project TRIAGE “Ultra-broadband infrared gas sensor for pollution detection”. Technical skills are required. Knowledge of electronics, photonics, programming languages, and previous involvement in the design and execution of experimental activities are merits.

The person we need

The person we need is strongly interested in experimental activities both in the lab and in outdoor environments, and has an aptitude for teamwork with organizational independence.

The following education, experience and expertise are required:


• MSc degree or equivalent in physics, engineering, applied sciences or similar fields
• Proven experience in lab work and participation in research projects, preferably in the sensors, sensor system integration and environmental monitoring domains
• Good knowledge of Matlab, Python, or other programming languages
• Good organizational and problem solving skills (planning, scheduling, managing resources, meeting deadlines)
• Good communication skills
• Fluency in English both verbally and in writing

In addition, the following education, experience and expertise will strengthen an application:


• Experience in writing scientific papers and technical reports
• Driver’s license is desirable to facilitate domestic travel for field work
• Doctoral degree is meritorious but not requested for this position

The workplace

You will work within the division of Sensor and Actuator Systems at IFM under the supervision of a senior scientist, and in close collaboration with the division of Environmental Change at TEMA. You will be part of an international team within a highly international work environment. The working language will be English.

The employment

100% during 11 months and 20 days.
