The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 47 500 students and 6 400 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study with strong research and study programmes attracting scientists and students from around the world. The department for Marine Sciences (http://marine.gu.se/english/) is Sweden's most complete academic environment for marine research and education, and it is one of few such institutions in Europe. The Department for Marine Sciences brings together expertise in physical oceanography, marine chemistry, marine biology, marine geology, and marine heritage conservation. Thus the department has excellent opportunities to meet future challenges in marine research and education. The department of Marine Sciences are located with permanent staff in Gothenburg and at the research stations Kristineberg and Tjärnö on the Swedish west coast north of Gothenburg.

Subject area description

We are seeking an independent and collaborative person with a background in marine pollution or related fields. The researcher will work on a new project funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. The project aims to quantify submarine groundwater discharge and related fluxes of pollutants to European coastal waters with a strong focus on the Baltic Sea. The research project will involve collaboration with international and Swedish researchers including close partners at Stockholm University. A candidate with interest on the topic and skills that build on our group’s skills is particularly welcome. The postdoc will have plenty of opportunities not only to produce first authored publications, but also engage in a highly collaborative environment and co-author publications by other group members and perform research that has a societal impact. A short description of the larger project can be seen here:

Duties
The postdoctoral researcher will join an international team working on marine chemistry in the Department of Marine Science in Gothenburg. Specific tasks will include field and laboratory investigations, advanced data analysis, writing of scientific manuscripts, and potentially co-supervision of Masters and PhD students. The postdoc may be expected to travel for extended periods of time (up to six weeks per year) to work in remote locations and on our new research vessel. In the second year, the postdoc will be mentored on how to apply for research grants and encouraged to apply for individual fellowships to continue this line of research.

Eligibility

The postdoctoral researcher is expected to have completed a PhD in 2020 or later in a relevant field. Candidates currently based on any country are welcome to apply. A start around August 2023 is ideal, but a later starting date is negotiable

Qualifications
The candidate should have completed a PhD in a relevant discipline and be able to demonstrate scientific achievements compatible with career stage and opportunity. Scientific achievements include academic publications in scientific journals or technical reports in the field. Evidence of ability to raise competitive funding will also be seen favourably. A background in environmental chemistry, hydrology, oceanography, and managing large datasets is desired. The work language will be English. A demonstration of strong laboratory and quantitative skills would be beneficial. Strong writing skills are essential.

Employment
Permanent employment

Extent: 100%

Location: Department of Marine Sciences in Gothenburg.

Assessment

The candidates will be judged for their (1) potential for growth as a researcher, (2) ability to collaborate and work independently, and (3) past academic performance relative to opportunity. In addition to pursuing their own research, the postdoctoral researcher may be required to perform duties such as teaching, supervision, and administration according to special regulations and a negotiated agreement. The candidate will be expected to work in a team, have flexibility to adapt to change, commitment to learn new skills, and build excellent data handling and communication skills. Communication skills in oral and written English are a requirement.

Short-listed applicants may be invited to write a short research proposal and attend an interview in English (in person or online).
