Context:
The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is Europe's leading research facility for scientific research using neutrons. Every year, we host over 2000 visits by scientists who come to the Institute to carry out world-class research.
Come and join the Reactor Operations Service within the ILL's Reactor Division as the future Shift Leader within the Quality Assurance Coordination Office (BCAQ - Bureau de Coordination et d'Assurance Qualité).
The Reactor Operations Service comprises 6 (six) 5-person shift teams (who work on a rota basis in 2 x 12-hour shifts) and the BCAQ, which has a team of 3 staff with regular working hours. Its role is to control, monitor and operate the High-Flux Reactor and associated installations on a 24/7 basis, 365 days a year.
Your tasks:
You will assist with the work of the BCAQ, while at the same time standing in for members of the shift teams on a regular basis (30 to 50 shifts per year), depending on your qualifications. After a period of familiarisation with the facility, you will perform stand-in duties as reactor operator and eventually as Shift Leader. You will have the following duties:
As a member of the BCAQ:
- Support the running of the Reactor Operations Service
- Manage the operations and periodic tests and inspections performed by the Service and the related documentation
- Assist with the coordination of work and interface management with other ILL services
- Stand in for members of the shift team in the reactor control room (including at very short notice).
As Shift Leader:
- Operate the reactor facilities while guaranteeing safety and availability objectives
- Manage emergency interventions in degraded, incident and accident situations
- Supervise the activities of your team members (inspection patrols, routine operations, troubleshooting)
- Monitor and operate installations and manage alarms (faults, equipment status, emergencies)
- Authorise worksites by issuing work authorisations and lockout/tagout arrangements
- Act as operational coordinator for tests and operations.
Your profile:
- You have a Level 4 or Level 5 qualification (NVQ, BTEC HNC/HND or equivalent) or apprenticeship degree, with a reactor operator licence (CCRN INSTN or equivalent), a naval reactor operator licence, or an equivalent qualification.
- You have at least 5 years' experience in the control and operation of a French basic nuclear facility (INB -Installation Nucléaire de Base).
- You have experience of managing a multi-disciplinary team.
- You are adaptable, meticulous, have good communication and analytical skills and are able to keep a cool head.
