Your Team

You will join the Detectors and Scientific Software team within the Controls and IT (KITS) group, a small international team with diverse scientific backgrounds who work on data acquisition, processing and analysis, either by devising and implementing custom solutions or by providing software tools for the beamlines.

Would you like to work at the brightest lightsource in the world?

MAX IV are looking for a Soft X-Ray Scientific Software Expert to take a leading role in the development and support of software for the analysis of data collected at the soft X-ray beamlines. You will need to develop a strategy for successfully serving a diverse scientific community and for providing tools which can be used for specific applications, taking into account increasing demands on data management in the Open Science era. Beside other team members you will work closely together with scientists, MAX IV users, including from industry, high performance computing experts and with MAX IV partners from Nordic academia and other large-scale facilities.

In supporting data analysis from a wide range of soft X-ray techniques you will be cultivating MAX IV science while learning new methods and mastering new applications of scientific software. As a member of the wider KITS team, you will develop your agile and team work skills and may also strengthen your competence in project management when coordinating large software projects.

The successful candidate will have the possibility to retain or continue their engagement in their own relevant research or software development collaborations and participate in experiments at MAX IV or other facilities. We are looking for somebody who understands the soft X-ray environment scientifically and who has also developed deeper skills in relevant scientific software related to the analysis of data.

Your main work tasks will be

- Development and support of scientific software tools aimed at the analysis of data from soft X-ray spectroscopic techniques
- Participation in related experiments
- Contribution to common tasks within the group and for the general support of the laboratory

To be successful in this role you need to have the following qualifications

- Bachelors or Masters degree in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, or similar subject
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience from a research environment in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry or similar field
- Strong familiarity with soft X-ray techniques through a minimum of 3 years' experience of soft x-ray data analyses
- A documented significant contribution to the development of a scientific software during the last 3 years
- Experience with Python, MATLAB, C++ or other major programming language
- Proven experience in collaborative software development.

Below are seen as merits

- PhD in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, or similar subject
- Experience with Photon Electron Spectroscopy experiments and data analysis
- Familiarity with data collection from electron analysers
- Familiarity with Igor Pro
- Awareness of Open Science and how soft X-ray techniques may adhere to these practices
- Experience of working at synchrotron light sources or other large experimental facilities
- Experience of working in an international environment

As a person you are

- A self-starter and problem solver
- Open to learning new technologies
- A team player committed to the goals of the team
- Reliable and responsible
- Able to listen and respect others

MAX IV is a Swedish national large-scale research laboratory hosted by Lund University. It provides scientists from Sweden as well as internationally, with state-of-the-art instrumentation for research in areas such as engineering, physics, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually, conducting ground-breaking experiments in materials and life sciences using the brilliant X-ray light.

The MAX IV Controls and IT team (KITS) deliver solutions to the whole MAX IV organisation in the areas of control system hardware, controls software applications, infrastructure and networking, information management and scientific software. This is a dynamic and highly challenging environment and requires close collaboration with the staff in order to understand the needs and be effective in forming solutions. We are around 50 people in total who work in 5 domains in a well organised and agile way. We hold values of lean management, knowledge spread, user autonomy, continuous improvement and flexibility as guiding principles for our work.
