The Challenge Ahead

We are currently working on the next installment in the Need for Speed series and we are looking for an experienced Technical Artist for our team in Gothenburg.


What a Technical Artist does at EA:

The Technical Artist implements, supports and maintains the art workflows and pipelines, writing and documenting tools for the internal team, as well as for distributed and outsourced teams. The successful candidate has strong artistic skills and experience with programming and scripting. The TA requires technical proficiency in a broad spectrum of disciplines, including lighting, rendering, modeling, surfacing, and vfx, and is responsible for ensuring art assets can be easily integrated into game without sacrificing the overall artistic vision or exceeding the technical limits of the target platform. The candidate also has knowledge of graphics-related programming languages and art authoring packages, and can troubleshoot art authoring and content pipeline problems.

The TA is part of the art team, coordinating closely with the artists, art director, tool and workflow programmers, and the rest of the TA community. The candidate is responsible for collaborating with other EA teams to harvest best-of-breed tools and techniques, and keeping up-to-date on industry advances, including console hardware, art packages, coding conventions and production techniques.


The Technical Artist also needs:

-Broad experience with artist tools, pipelines, and workflows, with at least one shipped title
-An understanding of three or more of the following: modelling, texturing, rendering techniques, shaders, lighting, character rigs, skinning, dynamics, particle systems, and image manipulation techniques
-Strong familiarity with Maya, Photoshop, and other DCC applications
-Strong knowledge of game engine asset requirements, performance budgets and profiling, build systems, asset conditioning pipelines
-Experience with console hardware performance characteristics and limitations
-Strong knowledge of programming and scripting languages such as Python, C# , C++, HLSL, mel, Maya API, XML
-Experience writing batch scripts to automate processes
-Ability to develop progressive techniques and procedures to solve art creation challenges
-Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills: candidate must be able to quickly identify and resolve issues under pressure
-Effective multitasking so as to track progress, solve problems and keep abreast of upcoming technologies that might influence our future workflows and pipelines
-An ability to define and estimate tasks in a well-organized manner
-An ability to Interact and collaborate with key client stakeholders (Art, Programming, Production)
-Great communication skills, a drive to improve all processes, and a strong motivation to make a difference
