The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Technician in the Integrated Control System Division.

Description of directorate/division
As a technician you will be part of ESS's Machine Directorate, responsible to deliver the accelerator and the target station.

You will join the Integrated Control System Division, responsible for the design, construction, commissioning, and operation of control systems for the ESS facility covering the accelerator, target station, neutron scattering instruments and conventional facilities. The Integrated Control System monitors and controls most of the operational aspects. We cover a wide range of sensing, control and automation technology from highly customized electronics specific for ESS applications to standardized PLCs controlling building automation. In particular you will join the Protection Systems Group whose mandate is to perform the design, realization, operation and consolidation of the ESS Machine Protection and Personnel Safety Systems.

Main Responsibilities


• Assemble, install, terminate, test and commission PLC and electrical systems and prototypes according to engineering data, drawings and personal knowledge of electrical, electronic and automation principles
• Provide technical assistance and resolution to electrical engineering problems before, during and after construction
• Commission, maintain, troubleshoot and repair PLC, electrical and electronic systems
• Conduct, witness and report on factory acceptance tests for PLC system racks
• Communicate with Electrical/Electronic/Automation Engineers to identify, define or solve system issues
• Conduct inspections for quality control programs and report findings
• Analyze and interpret test information to resolve design related issues
• Assist engineers to modify as built drawings and circuit diagrams

Required Qualifications


• Have a sound knowledge of Grounding/Earthing and EMC/RFI
• Have a good knowledge of national and European electrical standards
• Experience in creating risk assessments and working within safe construction site environments

Optional Qualifications


• Familiarity with the International Functional Safety Standards IEC 61508 and IEC 61511
• Experience in working with safety systems
• Understanding of operation of accelerators or neutron sources would be an advantage

Personal profile


• Ability to work effectively in and with team(s)
• Proven written and oral communication skills
• Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage
• Experience of working in an international environment is an asset
• Uses initiative to identify and resolve problems/issues

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.

The European Spallation Source ERIC will design, build and operate a multi-disciplinary, large-scale research infrastructure based on the world’s most powerful neutron source. European Spallation Source, ESS, will provide scientists with unique and powerful neutron scattering instruments for the study of a large range of materials – from polymers and pharmaceuticals to membranes and molecules. ESS project is partnered by 17 European countries, and hosted by Sweden and Denmark. ESS will be built in Lund, Sweden, by a collaboration of European scientists and engineers. ESS is planned to produce the first neutrons by 2019. When the facility is in full operation 2025, ESS has around 450 employees.
