Arbetsbeskrivning

Job description
Feed Screw Modelling in Continuous Direct Compression using Discrete Element Method

Thesis type: 30 credits
Project start: January 2024
Student location: On Site, Gothenburg Sweden

Background:
Continuous Direct Compression (CDC) is a manufacturing process used predominantly in the pharmaceutical industry to produce solid dose pharmaceutical products. One of the critical components in CDC is the feed screw. The feed screw, often non-cylindrical with uniquely pitched edges, plays a crucial role in the compaction process. It is typically equipped in a hopper and helps force the feeding of materials into the gap between the rollers. The screws allow building up pressure, densifying the materials, and improving the feed to the rollers. This mechanism aids in driving the powder-stock into the compaction area. Pre-densification and deaeration occur in the screw feed region during operation. The results would enable a better understanding of the segregation of particle, stresses experienced by particles which could potentially lead to particle breakage and mass flow rate through the feeder.

Thesis Objective:
The primary goal of this master’s thesis is to develop a comprehensive process simulation framework for feed screw modelling using the Discrete Element Method (DEM) modelling technique. The selected candidate will be expected to utilize their knowledge in modelling and simulation and data analysis to accomplish the following,
Modelling: Develop accurate material models that capture the feeding behaviour through the feed screws using DEM.
Process Simulation: Use the developed model to simulate feeding through the feed screw as a function of particle characteristics such as particle size distribution, agglomeration and breakage.
Validation: The results would be compared and validated through in-house experiments and/or data from literature.

Business Value:
The study would enable to establish a better understanding of the powder processing through feed screw in CDC which could help in predictions based on the material characterisation.
