Thesis work: Solvent Recycling, AstraZeneca Södertälje

Arbetsbeskrivning

Job description
Solvent Recycling Within API Production

As we approach a more circular economy, an increased need of recycling has become all more apparent. But how can we implement more of it?
If you want to contribute to more sustainable medicine through recycling, this project is for you!
AstraZeneca is a global, science-led, patient-focused pharmaceutical company with focus on development and marketing of prescription-based medicine. With over 83,000 employees globally, whereof 7400 in Sweden, AstraZeneca directly contributes to a respectable part of Sweden’s BNP. With this comes equal responsibility for us to care for our planet, and we want you to be part of our sustainability efforts.
At PET API in Snäckviken Södertälje, we produce active pharmaceutical ingredients used in various therapeutical areas. When producing any kind of medicine, as with any chemical plant, there is naturally waste generated. This usually takes the form of organic biproducts, emission or liquid waste and are in need to be taken care of in a safe manner.
The student will be included in the Process Technology team, consisting of 20 process engineers and chemists and will work cross-functionally together with several functions.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
The project will consist of two main areas. In the first topic the student will explore the feasibility of a large central distillation column, while the second will be focusing on smaller, up-stream units. The smaller units have no requirement for distillation, but rather technologies such as membranes.
The mains goals are to model and perform a sensitivity analysis on a central distillation unit for various inlet streams and compare it to when smaller, more modular, solutions are preferred over it.
Some of the work will require the student to go-and-look in a factory environment, however no laboratory work is expected to be included. The student is expected to be on site in Södertälje, but will be flexible to a certain extent.

Essential Requirements
We are looking for a student that is passionate about sustainability – in particular recycling with its pertaining technologies, and want to contribute to a cicular economy.
The student should be familiar with different separation technologies, mainly membrane filtration and distillation as well as thermodynamics. The student should have taken courses in basic chemical engineering, sustainable production and basic chemistry.
The student has a background in Chemical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering or equivalent.

Desirable Requirements
Extra merit is given if the student is also familiar with some of the following:
Pervaporation and solvent separation
LEAN manufacturing

Application
Randstad Life Sciences is cooperating with AstraZeneca in this recruitment process. We only handle applications sent through Randstad’s website.

All chosen candidates need to pass a background check and an alcohol and drug test before starting the project.
Application needs to be sent in at the latest 3d of November
For more information about the process, contact Linda Nordström consultant manager Randstad Life Sciences: linda.nordstrom@randstad.se
