WWF is hiring a Senior Specialist, Arctic Species
We are hiring a Senior Specialist, Arctic Species to lead and manage delivery of species conservation in the WWF network's global Arctic Programme. The WWF Arctic Programme advances a well-managed, biodiverse and resilient Arctic through advocacy and implementation of strategic conservation initiatives led by a team of multi-disciplinary experts. The Senior Specialist, Arctic Species provides leadership, strategic direction, coordination and technical support for the Arctic Programme's species work within the WWF network and externally, aligned with the WWF Arctic Strategic Plan.
We are looking for an experienced conservation strategist with sound technical knowledge and proven experience with species conservation in the Arctic. You will work from WWF's office in Sweden but hold responsibility for coordinating species conservation work at the pan-Arctic level. You will work closely with thematic experts and project leaders throughout WWF's network. This is a challenging senior role which requires multi-disciplinary and multi-national collaboration in order to create transformative change in the Arctic. This position reports directly to the Director of WWF's global Arctic Programme.

The person in this role will
. Lead the development, implementation and monitoring of a strategy for Arctic species conservation for the Arctic Programme, including areas of focus on wildlife conservation, habitat protection and underwater noise pollution
. Coordinate with subject matter experts within the global WWF network to promote knowledge sharing, collaboration and advance Arctic species conservation
. Translate scientific research into policy recommendations for advocacy towards Arctic species conservation
. Deliver policy outcomes for Arctic species conservation in international fora, including the Arctic Council, CAFF, PAME, IMO, CBD and Polar Bear Range States
. Provide support and leadership to the global WWF network on priority Arctic species conservation (polar bear, walrus, reindeer, narwhal, beluga and bowhead whales), including through technical and policy advice
. Develop the work plan and manage the budget for the species work stream, and facilitate and prioritize shared funding and initiatives
. Develop new initiatives and manage Arctic species projects contracted to external or WWF network parties throughout the project cycle
. Represent WWF's global Arctic Programme, develop and manage strategic partnerships within the WWF network and externally with governments, intergovernmental bodies, academia and eNGOs
. Collaborate with WWF global Arctic Programme team members, providing species conservation expertise to other work streams, contributing to programme management tools and supporting communications strategies and outputs
. Assist WWF offices with communications and fundraising efforts for Arctic species conservation
Key qualities
The successful candidate should show evidence of the following attributes:
. Proven experience in species conservation, with sound knowledge of the major conservation issues affecting Arctic species
. Extensive experience in key Arctic international policy fora, ie: Arctic Council, CAFF, PAME
. Proven experience developing and maintaining partnerships to advance strategic objectives
. Proven experience developing science-based policy for the Arctic region
. Direct work experience with international conservation NGOs.
. Strong and proven programme development, leadership, management, and coordination skills, interpersonal and teambuilding skills, understanding of project and financial management, and budgeting.
. Ability to translate technical and scientific information for a non-technical audience
. Demonstrated experience coordinating complex international programs with strong policy and advocacy components
. Experience with field-based research and species conservation activities

About you
. PhD in the field of natural resources management, biological sciences or conservation biology
. At least 10 years' experience in wildlife or conservation programme management, including at least 5 years in the Arctic context
. Proven leadership in Arctic international species fora
. Fluent in English, written and oral
. Excellent leadership skills
. Excellent planning and partnership/project management skills
. Excellent presentation and communication skills
. Proactive, self-motivated person who works well within a team but demonstrates ability for autonomy
. Demonstrated ability to work across multiple time zones in a cross-cultural context
. Ability to travel for meetings and visit project sites (up to 30% travel)
. Knowledge of key issues in Arctic species conservation is a must

WWF Sweden office is located in the beautiful Castle of Ulriksdal beside the Edsviken waterway, an inlet of the Baltic Sea.
