Project Manager for FP7 research consortium

The Institute of Environmental Medicine, a department at Karolinska Institutet, is an interdisciplinary research organization within the field of Environmental Medicine. The purpose is to carry out research and education, and perform investigations and analyses, pertaining to physical and chemical aspects of environmental medicine and health protection. Research in the Cell Death Research Group at the Division of Molecular Toxicology is focused on molecular mechanisms of cell death (apoptosis) and its implications for our understanding of the potential risk of engineered nanomaterials to human health. Karolinska Institutet seeks to recruit a Project Manager for a European Commission Collaborative Project financed under the 7th Framework Programme. The project, entitled "Comprehensive assessment of hazardous effects of engineered nanomaterials on the immune system (NANOMMUNE)" includes 14 investigators at 11 partner institutes in Europe and the United States. The total budget for the NANOMMUNE project is approx. 3.5 million EURO. The project is funded and the project start was in September 2008. The successful candidate will work in close contact with the Project Coordinator (Dr. Bengt Fadeel) and his Project Administrator (principal duties: financial administration), and will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the NANOMMUNE consortium. This will involve all aspects of project management including continuous contact with all project partners, monitoring of scientific progress, organization of meetings and workshops within the consortium, distribution of information within the consortium and maintenance of consortium website and public website, assisting the Project Coordinator in the preparation of scientific reports and communication with and reporting to the European Commission. In addition, the successful candidate will also interact directly with students and post docs in the various participating partner institutes, and may also participate in research management, including the supervision of nanotoxicological research activities, depending on the previous qualifications of the applicant. The successful applicant should have documented management experience, excellent oral and written communication skills including an excellent command of the English language, solid capabilities in organization and data management, and excellent inter-personal (social) skills. Previous experience in the management of projects within the European Framework Programmes is required, and documented experience of nanotechnological/toxicological research or other relevant field of research is considered highly advantageous. Moreover, for a combined research/management position, a PhD degree in cell biology, molecular biology, immunology, toxicology, or an equivalent field of research is required.
